When I had just started geocaching, I went on a business trip to Los Angeles. While I was there, I got the chance to pick up some cool geocaches, but not to do something else I had wanted to do: tour Beverly Hills and see if I could spot some of my favorite stars.
I had mentioned my desire to tour BH to the concierge at my hotel. He asked me who in particular I wanted to see. I told him I wanted to see some of the stars who were originally from Minnesota--Loni Anderson, Kevin Sorbo, Richard Dean Anderson, and some others. He just shook his head.
"You don't really want to do that sir. You'll only be disappointed," he said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Well, up North everybody is upright, with their feet firmly on the ground and their heads in the clouds. But when they head out West, it's like they take a strange left turn from reality. This place turns people in a new direction. Those nice Minnesotans you know don't exist here. You don't want to see them in their new habitat. They're not who you think they are," he said.
"But that can't be," I replied. "What about sweet little Amy Adams--Disney princess, Julia Childs fan......"
"It's called acting, sir." He handed me a couple sheets of paper. "Listen, go do a crossword puzzle or a sudoku, and get your mind off meeting these idols of yours. You'll feel better if you do."
I took the papers and wandered off, dejected. I never did solve his weird puzzles, and I never did get to see the stars. I still wonder where my life could have taken me if I had looked for the stars.
(For the record, I'm sure that the Minnesotans mentioned above are just as sweet and kind as they ever were before Hollywood.)
(PS.--My primary GPSr gave me the same (puzzle solution) coordinates when I scouted out the hide location and when I physically placed the cache. However, when placing the cache, my secondary GPSr was reading about 30 ft N of that spot. So if you're having trouble finding the cache, keep that in mind)
