Geocache Description:

This is a series of multi-caches that I intend to place around the rural churches of North Monmouthshire. There are so many lovely churches around the area that are undervisited, so I hope to attract a few more visitors to these great spots. I shall add to the series as I go along.

All of the caches start at the church where you need to find the answers to a couple of questions to allow you to find the final cache position, and none are intended to be particularly difficult (I would prefer you to find the caches) or are more than 1/2 a kilometre from the church.

This is the eighteenth in the series and starts at the church of St. Teilo in the village of Llanarth. Like many of the churches in this area (and around the country) the current building is built on the site of an older place of worship which was given to the Bishop of Llandaff by King Offa in the 7th century. The church consists of a nave, south porch, chancel and embattled tower on the western end topped with crocketed pinnacles. The tower currently houses six bells and also has it's own turret. The building underwent extensive restoration in 1851. If I'm honest this church was the hardest to plan as a cache as there aren't many features, but it is still worth a visit.

Look out for a stone in the graveyard carved with a cross and a now illegible inscription dating probably from the 7th century.

To find the whereabouts of the final cache location look for the answer to the questions below and replace the letters for the appropriate numbers in the co-ords at the bottom. So here we go:

Take a look at the top of the tower. How many of the crocketed pinnacles are there in total? A

How many of them are short ones? B

As you approach the porch you will see a gravestone close to the building next to the porch with a flower at the top. How many of the larger petals are there? C

Take a look at the large stone cross opposite the porch. There is a shape in the middle of the cross at the top (ie a hole). How many sides to that shape (careful now)? D

If you look at the small cross atop the porch entrance there is also a shape within that cross but inscribed this time. If this is a 'O' E=3, if it is a 'X' E=5, if it is a '+' E=7.

So replace your answers in this co-ord and off you go to get the cache! Final position N 51° BA.(D+E)DE W 002° (B+D)(C-B).(E-D)B(C+D)
The cache site has good views to Llanarth Court, and the cache itself is a specimen-type tube a bit bigger than a 35mm film canister.
