A large variety of hills produce is stored here in both cold storage and controlled atmosphere (CA) storage. Apples, cherries, apricots, almonds and even wine are all stored here at different times. This is a locally run co-operative where local farmers work together to help each other in many ways. The geocaching community is a bit the same as we co-operate together to play our game of hide and seek.
The Asthon Co-Operative Society is locally known as the Ashton Cold Stores.
I cannot find out when it began but I know my father and grandfather where involved in it being built so I am guessing in was in the 1950's. Cold storage was very new and individual growers could not afford their own so through-out the hills local growers banded together to build co-operatively. This one was built so that the “new modern” fork lift truck could be used. If you know any more history of the cold stores please contact me so I can include it here!
The cache is a 1 L fruit container painted black.
