Geocache Description:

Coming?....or Going?....

If you’re leaving, we’re sad to see you go. If you’re coming, then there’s heaps to do here, (as well as Geocaching of course!)

PLEASE NOTE: There is a long drop to the rivers edge over the bank - Please watch your step

Population: 45,000+

The Whanganui River is the second longest in the North Island and the longest navigable waterway in the country with 239 rapids and stunning bush scenery. It flows 290km (180 miles) from the upper reaches of Tongariro National Park to the Tasman Sea. In the 1900s, visitors called it the ‘Rhine of New Zealand’.

Whanganui refers to the river, national park and region, but there is no ‘h’ in the city of Wanganui.

A town, originally known as Petre was established at the rivermouth for the settlement of traders. The name was officially changed to Wanganui on 20 January 1854. Wanganui was incorporated as a Borough on 1 February 1872, and declared a city on 1 July 1924.

The city has a vibrant arts scene with fine arts, graphic design, glass blowing and fashion.

Wanganui’s Durie Hill elevator, built in 1919, is one of only two earth-bound elevators in the world.

The Memorial Tower is built from fossilised shell rock and offers excellent views of the city, Mount Taranaki, Mount Ruapehu and the Tasman Sea.

The Ward Observatory in Wanganui houses the largest unmodified refractor telescope still in use in New Zealand.

There are tons of places to go and things to do…..
