Kristiansand Domkirke


Kristiansand Domkirke er hovedkirke for Agder og Telemark bispedømme og menighetskirke for Domkirken menighet i Kristiansand. Den nåværende kirken er den tredje domkirken i byen og den fjerde kirken på Torvet i Kristiansand.


Bygningen



Kirken er bygd etter tegning av arkitekt Henrik Thrap-Meyer og er en av landets største. Kirken har en forenklet gotisk spissbuestil, og betegnes som nygotikk. Bygningen er 70 meter lang og 39 meter bred, og tårnet er 70 meter høyt. Opprinnelig hadde domkirken 2 029 sitteplasser og 1 216 ståplasser. I dag er den godkjent for 1 500 mennesker.

For å kunne utnytte de gamle murene fra kirken som brant i 1880, ble alteret lagt mot vest, mens kirker normalt pleier å ha alteret i øst.

Bygningsarbeidene ble ferdige 1. februar 1885, og hadde da kostet totalt 240 000 kroner. Blant annet gikk det med 700 000 murstein à 2 øre. Kirken ble vigslet 18. mars 1885 av stiftsprost Johan M. Brun som var fungerende biskop.

Tildliggere kirker



Kristiansand fikk sin første kirke i 1645 som ble kalt «Trefoldighetskirken». Den ble vigslet 21. juni 1646. Det var en liten kirke bygd i tre. Kristiansand ble stiftstad og bispesete i 1682. Byen måtte da også få en standsmessig kirke, og stiftets første katedral fikk navnet «Vor Frelsers Kirke». Den var bygd i stein og ble vigslet av biskop Hans Munch i 1696, men brant ned allerede i 1734.

Byens tredje kirke og andre domkirke ble vigslet i 1738 av biskop Jacob Kærup. Denne kirken gikk med i bybrannen 18. oktober 1880. Dagens kirke ble så reist på samme sted hvor alle de tre tidligere kirkene hadde stått.

Kristiansand Cathedral


Kristiansand Cathedral is the main church of Agder and Telemark diocese and parish church cathedral church in Kristiansand. The present church is the third cathedral in the city, and the fourth church on the town square in Kristiansand.


The Building



The church is built on a drawing by the architect Henry Thrap-Meyer is one of the nation's largest. The church has a simplified Gothic pointed arch style and termed new-Gothic style. The building is 70 meters long and 39 meters wide, and the tower is 70 meters high. Originally cathedral 2029 seats and 1216 standing. Today, it is approved for 1 500 people.

In order to exploit the ancient walls of the church that burned in 1880, the altar placed toward the west, while churches usually tend to have the altar in the east.

Construction work was finished 1st February 1885, and had cost a total of 240 000. Among other things happened with 700,000 bricks à 2 cents. Consecrated 18 March 1885 founded priest John M. Brown who was the acting bishop.

Former churches



Kristiansand got his first church in 1645 that was called "Trinity Church". It was inaugurated on 21 June 1646. It was a small church built of wood. Kristiansand was crayon city and a bishopric in 1682. The city had then also get a stand and bigger church, and the foundation first Cathedral was named "Church of Our Saviour." It was built of stone and was consecrated by Bishop Hans Munch in 1696, but burned down already in 1734.

The city's third church and other cathedral was consecrated in 1738 by Bishop Jacob Kærup. This church joined the city fire 18 October 1880. The current church was then built on the same spot where all three earlier churches had stood.
