Why Are We Bringing You Here?
The West Union Cemetery is a well-kept cemetery that is a source of pride for West Union.
There are a number of interesting monuments and associated history which we wish to share.
 
This particular monument is unique due to the material which composes the monument.
Most monuments and gravestones are typically made of granite, slate or marble.
This one is made of a metal referred to as white bronze.
White Bronze is an alloy of copper, tin and zinc.
For these monuments, the primary metal is zinc.
 
This cemetery hosts four metal monuments.
All four monuments were made by subsidiaries of The Monumental Bronze Company.
Monumental Bronze operated from 1874 to 1914 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
 
Three of the monuments were made by Western White Bronze Company in Des Moines.
Western White Bronze was in business 22 years from 1886 to 1908.
The final monument was made by Detroit Bronze which operated from 1881 to 1885.

It is possible during the winter for a monument to be covered wholly or partially with snow.
For obvious reasons, please no digging.

The sexton keeps the roads here plowed if there is snow.
Please remain on the plowed roads.
