One day, when the sea was rough and menacing, a wave came and threw to land a beautiful mermaid with scales glistening in the lower half of the body and very soft white skin on the upper half. Wheter as a fish or as a woman, she was a strange creature and unusually attractive. When she regained consciousness, she discovered that she was lying on top of a rock and had no way to return to the sea, which was his natural environment. Outside it, she would not have much time to live. Then appeared on the beach a young fisherman who was poor and sad and had no money to buy a boat and venture into the waters. Because he could not fill the nets of fish, he walked the rocks to catch crabs and mussels. When he was doing this monotonous task of every day, he lifted his head slightly and saw the beautiful mermaid who looked at him, begging for help. - Who are you and what are you doing here? - Asked the fisherman, who was fascinated and frightened by such an unexpected sight. - I'm a mermaid from the sea and was thrown upon this rock by a big and ugly wave that was jealous of my beauty. Now I'm stuck here and I'll die if not go back in the water. [...] If you put me in the water quickly, I'll come every week, at same day, here on the beach, to bring you gold and silver. This is your reward for what you'll do to me. The young fisherman, who was poor and had younger siblings to support, did not think twice: hold the mermaid and threw it into the water, but not before combining the day and time when she would visit every week. For years, the beautiful mermaid fulfilled what she promised. When she was in the beach with the fisherman, she gave him considerable amounts of precious metals, which he was applying for various deals. There weren't many meetings before he considered himself a rich man. The years passed, and the fisherman felt the effects of time. Aged. The mermaid, however, remained unalterably young and beautiful, showing she belongs to the world of eternal things. One day, the fisherman, who already owned homes, boats, cars and other assets that would give you the time to live well several lives, wondered: "Did I come to the beach every week to receive my reward or see the mermaid? "He soon realized it was the presence of the mermaid and her beauty that made him go that way, rain or shine. Gold and silver was devoted little attention. If one day she disappeared, his life would be meaningless. Despite having many suitors, the fisherman was never married, and the day that the mermaid, considering fulfilled his promise, stopped appearing on the beach, took hold of him a great sadness and he felt that all even all the wealth of the world would make him happy. To recall her, he built upon the rock, where many years before he found her, a beautiful bronze statue, that would remain there as a tribute to her beauty.
