#1A NoCMoC - Visitor Centre - Wood Ants Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Kitty!!: Unfortunately there is nowhere to replace the cache without adjusting the coordinates. Given the location (EWT land) this will require going through a lengthy permission process. I am therefore archiving the cache. The trail #B to #H will probably work better without this one to divert to.

Wood Ants

As you walk around the woodland on the Reserve you will notice Wood Ants and their Anthills. Wood Ants are the largest ants found in the UK They are between 5 and 11 mm in length.

Anthills are earthy domes, often built around a rotting tree stump and are covered in a thatch made up of small twigs and stems. Inside the anthill are a series of cambers linked from the entrance holes by galleries.

The queen lives in the centre of the anthill where she is fed by worker ants. She spends her life in the centre, laying eggs. When the eggs hatch into larvae the worker ants feed them until they pupate. The ants are cold blooded and the mound ensures that the eggs and larvae are kept at the right temperature. The worker ants will move them nearer the surface of the hill when it is hot and take them deeper inside the anthill when it is cold.

Ants freed on prey such as greenflies, caterpillars and many other insects and spiders. A single ant can carry more than twice its own weight.

Wood Ants produce formic acid in a gland at the end of their abdomen. This can be sprayed on both prey and predators - including humans.

During winter birds such as the Green Woodpecker feed on the hibernating ants and can take as much as 15 per cent of the colony - about half a million ants!
