Geocache Description:

A micro cache on a public foot path in Lyneham village.

Church of St. Michael, Lyneham This church dates from the later 14th and 15th centuries and consists of a chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled west tower. The tower, which has windows showing early Perpendicular tracery and the nave were both probably rebuilt during the late 14th century. It is possible that the north aisle could be later in date. The chancel which had 15th century features was in disrepair in 1662 and again in 1674. However, in 1860 a new chancel was built by William Butterfield, during this same period of time the nave was re-roofed and restored. In the south wall, a solitary Perpendicular window was replaced by two windows of a similar design. Near the south porch stands an ancient yew which is a well established tree. The church fittings include a 15th century chancel screen and a carved Jacobean screen below the tower arch. There is also a large wall monument commemorating Heneage Walker ( died 1731 ). It stands in the north aisle and is made up of an inscribed tablet flanked by Corinthian pilasters, surmounted by an open segmental pediment and a cartouche of arms. In 1553 there were reportedly 3 bells but one of these may have been reported as broken in 1662. By the 20th century the number had risen to 5 bells, this included one from around 1450 from the Bristol foundry. In 1926 one bell was recast and the whole peal was re-hung.
