Geocache Description:

Thompson's Mills (1858) is the oldest water-powered mill of any kind in Oregon and may be the oldest continually-operating water powered grain mill in the western United States!  Finding a 19th century mill in the western U.S. is very rare.  Today the Thompson's Mills State Heritage Site is operated by the Oregon Park and Recreation Department.   This cache is placed with permission and assistance from Park Ranger Tom. Do not attempt cache when the Park is closed.

The Mill is open daily from 9:00am - 4:00pm (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years day).  Parking and entry are free and you may explore the mill on your own or take a free guided tour. This provides a nice historical caching break if you are traveling on Interstate 5 and go to the town of Shedd. (exit 216 Halsey/Brownsville northbound and exit 238 Hwy 34 southbound to the town of Shedd, then east on Boston Mill Rd). After 40 years of operating as a flour grist mill, in 1898 the original Boston Mills converted from millstone grinding to roller milling. The name then changed to Boston Roller Mills to recognize the modern improvements.  Just as technology changes and improves today, millers of this period were improving their machinery to the newest and most efficient equipment.  This upgrade permitted better separation of the components:  bran, flour and germ.  The cache is not located at the coordinates but you will find it by solving this easy puzzle: The mill grounds are open and the Volunteers are there to give free tours and answer questions. The cache is placed somewhere on the grounds so use these clues to find it (all are outside) The 1917 Grain Storage-there are 6 storage chambers but only how many tall, white silos with graphics painted on them? To that number: add 4 = A
add 2= B
Subtract 1= C
Multiply by 4= D
add 6= E
N 44 27.ABC
W 123 04.DEC

Once you have the coordinates of the final stage, look around and outside to find the cache.  Please watch for muggles and replace the cache in the same location. This is a regular size cache big enough for most trackables and some swag. It is a good cache to do in the rain.
