Geocache Description:

Visit a historical Native American mission church.

The Deyo Mission was established by Elton Cyrus Deyo in 1883 on the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation. This Baptist missionary and his wife were not well accepted at first by the Comanches. The Deyos claimed only thirteen Comanche converts by 1901 but converted 150 over the next 10 years. EC Deyo was friends with Quanah Parker and officiated at his funeral.
The Deyo Mission, now the Deyo Baptist Church, has been in continuous use since its founding and has had a succession of Comanche pastors. Like many other Indian churches, it has often provided Comanches a way to maintain elements of their traditional culture and use their  native hymns. The area is no longer a reservation. The photo below shows the church as it stands today. The old school house is north of the church.
Congratulations to Rubiconlaw for the FTF!!
