About The Fountain

Though its official name is the "Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain", the fountain has also been called the Centennial Fountain, but it is most commonly referred to as the Lake Eola Fountain.  It is the "official" icon of the City of Orlando and is on everything from street signs to the City seal.  Lake Eola Park and the Fountain are the crown jewels of the City and are two of the most memorable landmarks in Orlando.

The first signature Lake Eola fountain was installed in 1912, by Mayor Sperry at a cost of $10,000.

A replacement, originally dubbed the "Centennial Fountain," was installed in 1957 at a cost of $350,000.

The actual name of the fountain is the "Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain".

The fountain was damaged by lightening in August of 2009 when it was rendered inoperable.

The Orlando Sentinel Reported: Even before the lightning strike in August 2009, the 53-year-old fountain was showing its age. Many of its lights no longer worked, pumps weren't working properly and its sea foam-green plastic shell was cracked and faded.

The renovation included a new exterior frame, Plexiglas skin, lighting, pumps, piping, electrical controls and spray jets. Additional colored lights were added to the fountain's upper and lower rings. The overhaul has added more sophisticated lighting that can be programmed to change with music played through speakers around the park.  After these renovations the fountain was turned back on to the delight of many citizens and visitors in June, 2010.

The fountain's electric bill will show big savings from new energy-efficient pumps and LED lights instead of incandescent bulbs.
