[CC] King Tut Letterbox Hybrid

This cache has been archived.

Cold Cache Crew: It's time to bring another year of the Cold Cache series to a close. The snow is finally gone (despite the Groundhog assuring us it would have been sooner) and this cache series is complete.

Remember: If you found all caches in the 2013 series except "Queen Elizabeth", contact Bumble and he will grant permission to log that as a bonus find (so you can complete the series).

Bumble would like to thank the 2013 Cold Cache Crew members (bretina, MI Barrel Makers, TJPost, Addham, N8theGR811, and spartanalum) for all of their work on this series.

So long, farewell, until next year ...

Geocache Description:

February 16 - Tomb of King Tutankhamen unsealed in Egypt in 1923

This is a letterbox cache taking you on a Hunt for the remains of King Tut. This area can be wet and muddy and some of the bridges can be slippery. Please be prepared. Posted coords are the best parking for this area.

 • Start by proceeding to the Remington park sign by the entrance to the parking lot.
 • Proceed toward the right field of the baseball field. When you see the outfield sign if it is odd number turn right and cross the bridge, if it is even turn left and head into the water.
 • Continue along the path, you will pass between two trees that you can almost touch at the same time (if your arm span is about the same as mine).
 • Next you will proceed down a hill and notice a bench, enjoy a brief rest. Once you continue along the path you then will pass between two large trees that most people will both be able to touch.
 • The next noticeable item you will pass is a burled tree. I hope you are still enjoying the hunt for King Tut...
 • You should notice a blue marker about 4 foot high that you will pass on your right.
 • Next I noticed two down trees that were almost parallel to each other (on the right side of the trail). Make note of the approximate angle of the trees to the path and also there is a wood post - what color is it?
 • How many bridges have you crossed and how many benches have you seen? It does not matter just keeping you on your toes to make sure you are paying attention.
 • Another bench will pass this one is set off the trail a bit (on your right) How many 2x6 boards are on it?
 • Proceed and you will loop around a tree. Then the trail will split. If that last bench had nine 2x6's, stay straight which will veer gently left. If there were ten then take a sharp left here at this large stump.(if in doubt they combine back together)
 • Pass another blue stake about 4 foot tall. You are getting very close to the Tomb of King Tut. The trail may be quite curvy and you will notice a large down tree by the trail. There is a very noticeable (at least when there is no snow on the ground) tree that has a glittery white mossy substance on it that is a true sign the plunder is near.
 • Proceed to the end of that down tree farthest from the trail and carefully work on extracting the cache. It is a large container and will not be easily missed but please remove it carefully and rehide it well since we do not want any Muggle to find and plunder the tomb. Oh and yes the cache container is a nested series of containers much like the original remains were found in. ( I did not get the gold inlay or paint out though).
I hope you enjoyed your journey. You can either retrace your steps or proceed around the rest of the loop and find yourself near where you began.

Tutankhamun was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (ruled ca. 1332 BC – 1323 BC) He is popularly referred to as King Tut. Tutankhamun was nine years old when he became Pharaoh and reigned for approximately ten years.

Although there is some speculation that Tutankhamun was assassinated, the consensus is that his death was accidental. A CT scan taken in 2005 shows that he had badly broken his leg shortly before his death, and that the leg had become infected. DNA analysis conducted in 2010 showed the presence of malaria in his system. It is believed that these two conditions (malaria and leiomyoma) combined, led to his death. With the death of Tutankhamun and the two stillborn children buried with him, the Thutmosid family line came to an end.

The 1922 discovery by Howard Carter and George Herbert of Tutankhamun's nearly intact tomb received worldwide press coverage. It sparked a renewed public interest in ancient Egypt, for which Tutankhamun's burial mask remains the popular symbol. Exhibits of artifacts from his tomb have toured the world.

For many years, rumors of a "Curse of the Pharaohs" (probably fueled by newspapers seeking sales at the time of the discovery) persisted, emphasizing the early death of some of those who had first entered the tomb. However, a recent study of journals and death records indicates no statistical difference between the age of death of those who entered the tomb and those on the expedition who did not.

If Tutankhamun is the world's best known pharaoh, it is largely because his tomb is among the best preserved, and his image and associated artifacts the most-exhibited. As Jon Manchip White writes, in his foreword to the 1977 edition of Carter's The Discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun, "The pharaoh who in life was one of the least esteemed of Egypt's Pharoahs has become in death the most renowned."
