Geocache Description:

Graves Gone

Grave Island is at the north eastern end of King George Sound, near to Murdunna on the Forestier Peninsula in south-east Tasmania. The Tasman Highway passes close by.

In the middle of the 19th century there was a slaughter house and huts for butchers operating in the area (then known as the Sounds). It is possible (or even probable) that Grave Island served at that time as a burial place but no traces are visible now. (A few modern artifacts can be seen however.) I have been unable to find out much information about the island's history.

Grave Island is part of the coastal reserve, about 100m by 50m in size and covered in light bush. It can be visited at low tide by walking over the sand (about two hundred metres or less depending on the route taken): be prepared to get wet feet. Alternatively the end of King George Sound is sheltered and usually calm so a water approach using a kayak or shallow draft boat is possible. There is a good boat ramp a bit over half a kilometre away on Sommers Bay Road. Very keen geocachers could, of course, swim and/or wade. When the conditions are right, finding this cache would be a great adventure for older children.

The Graves Gone geocache is hidden on the island near to the edge in a spot that is very unlikely to have ever been used as a grave.
