BACKGROUND
Jonathan Dickinson State Park (JDSP) is named after a 17th century British Quaker merchant. The barkentine "Reformation" was driven into a reef then wrecked ashore on Jupiter Island, north of the modern Jupiter Inlet and east of the park. The crew and passengers all made it ashore alive, including Jonathan Dickinson, his family, and a group of Quakers traveling from Jamaica to Pennsylvania.
The group were captured by local Native Americans (Jaega or Jobe Indians). After several days of captivity, they were allowed to head north but were subsequently captured again, this time by Ais Indians. After further captivity, they were handed over to the Spanish who took them to St. Augustine. The Spanish treated them well and gave them canoes and supplies to reach Charles Town - at the time, the southernmost port of the colonies.
Dickinson later served as mayor of Philadelphia. He published his experiences in the book "God's Protecting Providence".
