The6Ted1Stevens1Anchorage2International1Airport9is6much1more5than0just0a0place9to4wait0in line or lose your luggage. Here are a few interesting facts you might not be aware of.

It’s #2 in the U.S. for landed weight of cargo aircraft right behind Memphis, TN.

It’s #4 in the world for cargo throughput just behind Hong Kong, Memphis, and Shanghai.

Almost 5 million passengers flew into or out of the airport in 2011 alone.

It’s home to the largest and busiest floatplane base in the world.

Currently the airport provides 15,577 jobs in Anchorage. That’s 1 in 10 jobs in Anchorage.

In 2011 there were over 50,000 passenger aircraft landings and almost 42,000 cargo aircraft landings.

The airport encompasses 4612 acres and 768 of those acres are paved.

3 of the runways are over 10,600 feet long with the longest being 12,400 feet.

Nearly 2 million gallons of fuel is pumped each day at the airport.

Last but not least, the airport is never closed for snow. In fact, it is a 5 time winner of the Balchen Post Award for Large Airport Snow Removal Programs which is awarded to airports able to keep runways open under adverse snow conditions. 2011-2012 was a record snow year and airfield maintenance moved over 6 million tons of snow from November to April.

Go check out our outstanding airport. You’ll see a variety of planes. Most of the Boeing family comes in and out each day including: 737, 747, 757, and 767. You might even catch a glimpse of a custom 747 labeled “Dreamliner”. Cargo planes from all over the world can be seen daily from countries such as China, Korea, and Russia. If you like old things watch for the radial engine DC-3 and DC-4 as they can be seen regularly.

Join the regular plane spotters at the end of Point Woronzof Rd. watching planes landing on runway 14 and taking off on runway 32.
