Até quase finais do século XIX, sobre o Arade, não havia pontes. A passagem para a outra margem fazia-se de formas alternativas: No século XV, O Rei D. Afonso V, concede a Álvaro de Teivas, o privilégio de explorar a travessia do rio com uma barca.
Nos finais do século XVIII, o Bispo do Algarve, D. Francisco Gomes de Avelar, manda construir uma passagem (calçada no meio do sapal) que ligava Portimão a Ferragudo. No extremo da calçada havia 2 pilares em cantaria, e num deles podia ler-se o seguinte:
"a vida presente é a passagem para a eternidade".
Entre Janeiro de 1875 e Abril de 1876, constrói-se a ponte rodoviária. A obra foi executada pela companhia Five Lille segundo um projecto do engenheiro Gustave Eifell.
A ponte dispunha de um tabuleiro com 332 metros de comprido, construído em madeira de carvalho, assente sobre 7 pilares de cantaria.

Until almost late XIX century, over the Arade river, there were no bridges. The crossing to the other side was made in alternative ways: by the XV century, the King Afonso V, provides Álvaro de Teivas the privilege to explore the river crossing with a barge.
In the late XVIII, the Algarve Bishop, Francisco Gomes de Avelar, orders the build of a passage (pavement through the saltmarsh) to connect Portimão to Ferragudo. At the end of the passage there were two stonework posts, and in one of them you could read:
"the present life is the passage to eternity".
Between January 1875 and April 1876, the highway bridge is built. The building was made by the Five Lille company, following a Gustave Eifell design.
The bridge deck was 332 meter long, built in oak wood, over 7 stonework posts.
