A short trail in Nottingham City Centre highlighting the architecture of Watson Fothergill (1841-1928). Born Fothergill Watson and later changing his name he was one of the leading local architects practising on the Nottingham Area from about 1870 to 1906. During this time he designed over a hundred buildings including banks , churches, shops, and warehouses, many of which survive today. This walk around the city will take you to a small selection of his work.
Watson Fothergill worked in the Gothic Revival and Old English vernacular styles - very popular in Victorian times. These styles were loosely based on medieval churches and castles and 16th/17th century tudor buildings. Fothergill's buildings were very distinctive often featuring towers and turrets, tall chimneys and walls decorated with horizontal lines of blue/black bricks. His more important buildings were decorated with carvings of animals, plants, beasts and gargoyles. He often used heavy dark wood beams in porches and eaves of his buildings.
This first location is the Rose of England built in 1899 and uphill to the left of the cache site. It stands rather strangely amongst the 60s and 70s rebuild of this area of town.Walk uphill to observe the typical Fothergill architecture more closely.
All caches are magnetic micros containing a log so BYOP. Stealth is required at all. Enjoy.
