The Seven Years War (1756-1763) was part of a series of major European Wars between 1688 and 1815, most of them stemming from rivalry between Great Britain and France. This was a world war, with fighting not only in Europe but also in the Americas and Asia.
The war was fought between England (under Prime Minister William Pitt the Elder) and Prussia (the largest German state, under Frederick the great) against France (Louis XV), Austria (then an empire under Maria Theresa), Russia, Sweden, and Spain.
Fighting first broke out in North America in 1754 because of a territorial dispute in what is now western Pennsylvania. Among those involved was a young George Washington. Known in North America as the French & Indian War, this was the fourth time in less than a century that the English colonies fought French Canada (and their many Native American allies). Despite early setbacks, the British won a pivotal victory on the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec City. The battle famously resulted in the death of both commanders, General James Wolfe and Marquis Louis-Joseph de Montcalm. All of Canada was under British control by the end of 1760.
In Europe, fighting broke out in 1756 largely due to continued rivalry between Prussia and the Austrian Empire over the region of Silesia. Prussia was heavily financed by the British during the war; Prussia did most of the continental fighting while the British focused on their naval superiority and colonial campaigns.
By 1763, Prussia had fought its combined enemies to a draw, aided by Russia's early withdrawal from the conflict due to a change in monarch. Meanwhile, the British had captured many French colonies, including all of Canada. They had also captured the important port of Havanna, Cuba which they returned to Spain in exchange for Florida.
The Seven Years War had several important consequences. It sparked Pontiac's Rebellion, a major Native American uprising against the British colonies. British Parliament enacted new taxes after 1763 to pay war debt; these were the famous 'taxes without representation' that were a major cause of the American Revolution in 1776. France's support of the American rebels stemmed from a desire for revenge against Britain. The costs of these wars would lead to the French Revolution in 1789. Spain also supported American colonists because they wanted Florida back (and they got it).
