Geocache Description:

It's a log only cache so bring your own pen.  There is a historical marker just to the south east of the cache.  Be sure to stop and gaze at the countryside that is now the ghost town of Keokuk Falls.

keokukfalls _____________Keokuk Falls had a post office from January 13, 1892, until February 15, 1918. Henry J. Jones was the first postmaster.

Keokuk Falls became one of the most famous liquor towns in Oklahoma, because it was in the "wet" Oklahoma Territory, near the "dry" Indian Territory. The town was a violent outlaw/saloon town whose hey day was 1891 to 1907. The town became dry at statehood and statewide prohibition brought about the demise of Keokuk Falls, Oklahoma.

Keokuk Falls were on the North Canadian River, about three feet high. They are no longer visible since the riverbed has shifted. Town was named for Chief Keokuk.  It was known as an "outlaw" town and wooded sidewalks were still visible (some remember them as bloodstained due to gun fights) until a few years ago. It was once a "haven" for the likes of Pretty Boy Floyd and other unsavory characters.
