North of Malvern in 1857, a baby was born who was destined to become a great composer. As a young man he taught himself to play a particular wind instrument in order to play in a wind band with a group of his friends, which included his brother Frank. In April 1918, whilst living in this cottage in West Sussex, he started work on his famous cello concerto. His first full scale work for orchestra was premiered in September, 1890 which he conducted himself. In 1913 came the first performance of this work, which was based on a character by William Shakespeare. In 1904, at a music festival at Covent Garden featuring a selection of his works, this orchestra was playing. His birthplace is now a museum to his life.

Weston under Pennard is where his mother came from. He had no sons, wrote no works specifically for the flute and no fourth symphony. There is also no record of any clarinet concerto, such as those written by other composers. His variations, based on people he knew, as well as a dog, is a concert hall favourite. His opus 58 was the last work he recorded in the studio, in 1933. He married one of his pupils, Caroline Roberts, but she was normally known by her second name. The first performance of this famous choral work, in Birmingham in 1900, was a disaster.
