From Redpoll (the last cache of the short route) continue along the well marked Red trail track up the hill. As the route heads further away from the dam you are less likely to meet any muggles as you walk along the tree lined path so you have a good chance of spotting a few birds along the way. Caution; if you plan to do the whole route please note that the descent path towards the end of the route is extremely steep and muddy. Consequently they can be very dangerous during or immediately after bad weather. Hiking boots are advised.
Stonechats are rather robin-like in appearance with large rounded head, long legs and upright stance. Stonechats always perch in an open position on top of a bush or fence post and have a close affinity with gorse. The distinctive male in breeding plumage has a very black head with a contrasting white collar and very red breast. There is usually a clear area of white on the rump and a white flash on the wing. Females and young birds are less well marked but retain the round headed appearance with a large dark eye and at least a trace of a dark chin. The stone chat has a clear attachment to gorse which the male uses as a song perch from which he will launch into the characteristic song flight when he appears to dance in the air.
