Treasured memories of our past
TO FORGET ONES ANCESTORS IS TO BE A BROOK WITHOUT A SOURCE,A TREE WITHOUT A ROOT.(Chinese proverb) Coobowie is a part of our family history. We will endeavour to take you back to our past and hope you enjoy a few caches we put out in this little seaside town. Growing up visiting we always called this town 'The Creek" or 'Tape Town' Our family name is Tape and our family were some of the first settlers. They are well known builders along the Penninsular In the 1800's our family migrated to this area. When asking our Dad why it was called 'tThe Creek' he says because there use to be a creek running through the town. As a child our great grand parents [Gam and Farna] ,grand parents[ nana and papa ] and other family members lived here along Beach Rd We had many happy times walking along the beach made of sand and shell grit, made sand castles and swam in the water. The jetty in those days was made of rocks and millions of tiny crabs would hide and run along the beach. What fun we had! My dad talks about the times when he would go fishing with his dad in a little timber boat out as far as Troubridge Island. The playground has changed since we were young and the old hurdie gurdie, maypole and timber swings were our favourites.' Unfortunately the lovely big old trees are no longer standing so magestic . Visiting Gam and Farna was truly exciting due to huge fig trees and an outside dunny. Homemade fig jam and fresh clotted cream was served at a kitchen table that filled the kitchen. An outside celllar filled with old books ,newspapres ,old musical instruments and bottles was a must for us kids to explore. Coobowie is an aboriginal name meaning "Wild Fowl Water" In 1838 the area was known as Deception Bay . The bay was beautiful and early explorers expected to find fresh water and found non,so the area became known as Deception Bay before being named Coobowie. Hope you come on this journey with us and stay awhile. ELIZABETH earthlight and GWEN the x-trailers Due to the x-trailers and myself placing more caches in this series we have renamed and renumbered a few of the caches. Congratulations Saints 1 on FTF
