I've seen this sign several times while traveling this section of the highway and wondered, who was Theodore Fohl? This is what I found out but if you know more, please share it in your log.
There is parking at the side road by the sign. You will have to climb a small bank to get to the cache. Look for a small tree near the sign.
Theodore was one of the people responsible for organizing the nation's first cooperative timber protection association. Before 1900, the loggers were the ones responsible for fire protection. Theodore was the one that asked Mable Gray, the cook for the Clearwater Timber Company at Bertha Hill to climb a hemlock snag and watch for fires. If she spotted a fire, she would ride a pony to the loggers who then were responsible for putting it out.
He later became the chief fire warden of the Clearwater Timber Protective Association (known as CTPA).
This sign is in recognition of his efforts.
