It's been a REALLY long time since I was up here last, and boy, have things changed! I had intended to place this cache on the top of Pond Peak, but the road to the summit has been gated off to deter vandalism to the towers, so I decided to place it in an alternate spot. I would also assume that the piece of plywood on the post near the cache was once a "No Trespassing" sign, so just to be on the safe side, don't turn off the main road and head up toward the towers.
The cache is located at an altitude of 7814' near the top of Pond Peak, the third highest peak in the Pah Rah Range. There are great views of downtown Reno and the north end of Spanish Springs from up there.
I accessed the area from the Wadsworth side, coming up through Olinghouse, and yes, the road is once again open to the public...just obey the "No Trespassing, No Shooting, No Stopping, No Leaving Roadway" signs posted along the road as you pass through Lake Mountain Mining's property. I hear tell you can also access the peak from the west, via Wilcox Ranch Road, although I've never personally traveled that entire route (if anybody does come up from the west, let me know how the trip was). The listed terrain rating is for the route I took.
I get the feeling this is destined to be a lonely cache, and that's just fine with me. Hopefully, it will get found a little more often than my other mountaintop cache, (GC1HT97) "New Pass Peak" but I won't hold my breath.
