Geocache Description:

Cache is hidden among the sand dunes by the North Jetty. Original contents include a log/pen, a few shells, some fossilized shark teeth, little something for FTF, and other assorted sea swag. Plenty of routes to take to get to this one. You can take a nice stroll down the jetty and beach, hike through the dunes, or the more (less?) adventurous can take off road vehicles to the GZ. Sand can get deep and vehicles can get stuck beyond the parking area, so use caution. I prefer the short walk.

The North Jetty is a popular surf spot in the area...It is also popular among sharks. On October 30, 2012, surfer Scott Stephens became the most recent victim of a North Coast shark attack not too far from here. Luckily, Scott survived his encounter with what is believed to be a Great White. He suffered a nasty 14 inch bite wound to his torso which required immediate emergency medical attention. The surfer managed to punch the shark in the face which caused it to let go. Fellow surfers rendered assistance and rushed him to the hospital where he underwent life-saving surgery. Stephens now has a gnarly scar, a messed up surfboard, and one heck of a story to tell............ Sharks are not ruthless blood thirsty murderers. Many "attacks" are a case of mistaken identity where the shark confuses a human with their natural prey. We need to remember that when we put on our wetsuits (seal costumes) and paddle, kick, or swim into the ocean, we are not alone and no longer at the top of the food chain. We are in their world now.......Enjoy the Cache!
