Taking its name from the crossing over the River Avon, Linlithgow Bridge lies to the west of Linlithgow in the West Lothian council area. I have included a waypoint for parking as this is a busy road. There is a voucher with a code for a free issue of 'the week' paper, and a memory stick for the first to find!
Descibed by scholars as a lifted road, this is the second brdge to replace the original bridge. It was completed in 1960. The original being built around 1650 by Alexander, Earl of Linlithgow. The original bridge lined up with the road at the side of the Bridge Inn. It is said that in times of drought/ low river levels that the old stumps can be seen from the lookout/ viewing area on the south side of the Bridge. Great views of the 23 arched Avon viaduct built in 1841 can also be had from here. On the North side viewing area the weir can be seen. There is also steps down to below the Bridge and an overgrown path that leads to the side of the weir.***Congratulations Clarinet2 on being First to Find***
