Geocache Description:

This earth cache will take you to a sandbar that was formed after the building of the causeway conection Barrington and Cape Sable Island.

Before the causeway was built this area used to be all under water. A ferry  was the means of travel between   Barrington   and Cape Sable Island.   The current was able to travel freely from the east side to the west side of the Island carrying sand with it that was picked up on the east side of the Island.

Before the building of the causeway the government considered building a bridge to join the mainland to the Island. They poured a cement structure  and one made out of steel and iron.  They did this to test if they would withstand the ice during the winter months. They scratched this idea and went ahead with the causeway that was finished in 1949.
These 2 structures was also used by the locals as a starting point for there boat races that they held on July 1st of each year. They would line up between them and when the gun was fired they would race a mile out in the passage and turn and come back.

After the building of the causeway joining the two points the currents no longer was able to travel freely from east to west. The currents and waves coming up the east side of the Island would pick up sand from as far away as 2 to 3 miles down the eastern side of the Island. No longer able to travel through the passage a sand bar began to form and growing in size with the passing of time.    It is estimated that the sand here is 30 feet deep.  You will find plant life and small trees beginning to grow on the sandbar.
