Marula Tree
In order to find this cache you will need to visit the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve and identify the trees at the noted waypoints (which are all within the confines of the picnic site).
The published co-ordinates are for the reserve gate and parking is available in the picnic area. A small admission charge is levied (R20 per adult, R10 per child at the time of publishing) Holders of Rhino Cards gain free admission.
To find the cache:
- Visit each of the trees at Waypoints 1 - 5 as supplied in the listing. These trees are all in the bounds of the picnic area.
- Note the English name (see clue below) and the Tree number.
- Calculate the final location of the cache as follows:
Trees:
- Tree 1: ----onw---: S29 46.377 E30 49.839
- Tree 2: -----al Go--------. S29 46.350 E30 49.816
- Tree 3: ---ber E--------. S29 46.364 E30 49.832
- Tree 4: --r--a. S29 46.362 E30 49.841
- Tree 5: ---est --shw-----. S29 46.351 E30 49.855
Final Location = S29 46.ABC E30 50.XYZ
A = Tree 5 - 1st digit minus 2nd digit.
B = Tree 2 last digit plus Tree 3 first digit.
C = Tree 3 last digit plus Tree 1 last digit.
X = Tree 1 - 1st digit.
Y = Tree 4 - last digit.
Z = Tree 2 - sum of 1st and 2nd digits.
Once you have calculated the final location, you should follow the Yellow Trail to the bottom of the gorge. Be sure to arrange a hiking party of at least two persons and take sufficient water with you.
You will need to make one crossing of the Molweni River. Note that after heavy rains this may be difficult or sometimes even impossible. Check at the KKNR offices before leaving the picnic area. During the winter months (May - September) the Molweni is usually easily crossed using stepping stones.
A spoiler pic is available showing the cache hiding spot.
