THE LIGHT OF THE IRISH
It looks like it's upside down but it's not. It all started when a group of Irish people wanted the green light on top of the red because to them red represented the British. First,
John Ryan requested that they hang the light upside down. They did for a while then the government stepped in and changed it back. After that the red light got broken over and over again. Every time it was fixed the light was broken by a group now known as the stonethrowers.
The residents of Tipperary Hill approached the city and convinced them to change the light. It is the only one of its kind. One Sunday late in 1996 a park opened near the light. The park is to remember the stonethrowers, their persistence, and their Irish pride.
