Il “Quartiere” (“The District”) is among the novels of Vasco Pratolini, one of the most closely linked to the center of Florence. It is set in the '30s in the neighborhood of via dei Pepi and via dell’Ulivo, part of the popular district of Santa Croce, and narrates the sentimental education and the formation of political consciousness of a group of a group of working-class boys and girls.
It is a choral novel: the narrator (Valerio, who identifies with the writer) is just one of the characters (“We were common creatures. We only needed a gesture to raise anger or love”).
The district of Santa Croce, which is the background of the story, is the real protagonist, even in its political dimension: part of the buildings, including the homes of some of the characters, will be demolished to make room for new buildings, for the tendency of Fascism to demolish the popular districts to decrease revolutionary risks.
Not even the destruction of the old houses by the fascist municipality undermines the very deep ties between the people of the neighborhood: only a few of the inhabitants leave Santa Croce to move to the suburbs and very few of them adhere to Fascism.
“Il Quartiere” è, tra i romanzi di Vasco Pratolini, uno dei più strettamente legati al centro di Firenze. È ambientato negli anni ’30 nella zona di via dei Pepi e via dell’Ulivo, parte del popolare quartiere di Santa Croce, e narra l’educazione sentimentale e la formazione della coscienza politica di un gruppo di ragazzi del popolo.
Il romanzo è di tipo corale: la voce narrante (Valerio, che si identifica con lo scrittore) è solo uno dei personaggi («Eravamo creature comuni. Ci bastava un gesto per sollevarci collera o amore»).
Il quartiere di Santa Croce, che fa da sfondo alla narrazione, è il vero protagonista, anche nella sua dimensione politica: parte degli edifici, tra cui le case di alcuni dei personaggi viene demolita per fare posto a nuove costruzioni, per la tendenza del fascismo a demolire i quartieri popolari per far diminuire il rischio rivoluzionario.
Neanche l’abbattimento delle vecchie case da parte dell’amministrazione fascista fa venire meno, però, i profondissimi legami tra i ragazzi del quartiere; solo pochi degli abitanti lasciano Santa Croce per andare ad abitare nelle periferie e pochissimi di loro aderiscono convintamente al fascismo.
