Elijah McGuire - Revolutionary War Soldier

You are seeking a short two stage multi cache by first visiting the McGuire Family Cemetery. This small cemetery is surrounded by a wrought iron fence and contains just two graves. It is found on what was the McGuire homeplace. The two marked graves are for Elijah and his wife, Everett.

He was born in Cumberland County, Virginia on the January 19, 1757; then later moved to South Carolina.

Elijah McGuire enlisted for a term of three years on August 17, 1777, in the Company commanded by Captain Uriah Goodwin, Regiment of Colonel Thompson in the Regular Continental Line. He was transferred into Captain John Buchannon's Company in which he served as a Sergeant until he was captured by the British in Charleston, South Carolina. He was to remain a prisoner until the expiration of the term for which he had enlisted, but he managed to escape the custody of the British. He again enlisted in the Cavalry commanded by Captain Philip Waters and served until the end of the War. He was distinguished for ardent patriotism and eminent courage and was connected with many daring and perilous enterprises in defense of his country.

After the war, he married Miss Everett Williams,.Elijah McGuire came to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama in 1817 with his family and settled here in Samantha. He and Everett lived a happy life together for upwards of 60 years. In his will Elijah provided for the extended care of his widow, as she was “too infirm to manage the property herself.”
