Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache for a relatively unheralded local hero.

There are a number of local Ayrshire 'heroes' so to say.  From the father of penicillin Alexander Fleming to the cycling maverick that is Graeme Obree, with many many more to be mentioned.  However, I'll take a punt that not many have been immortalised in their home town coat of arms.

Following the death of Robert I of Scotland, or Robert the Bruce as we prefer to know him, Sir William Keith of Gawliston [Galston as it is now shortened to] travelled to Spain as part of a crusade and recovered the heart of the fallen King Robert.  The heart was returned along with the heart and bones of fellow crusader Sir James Douglas.  Robert the Bruce's heart was thereafter buried in Melrose, with Douglas' heart and bones fully interred in the Kirk of St Bride, Douglas.

The coat of arms, as you can see, depicts a heart being held by a hand in mail, which is Sir William Keith's.

And now for the cache.  You will be taken to an area I know very well from my younger years, and it seems one of the few places in the Irvine Valley that remains cache free, until now.  The Cessy Wids, or the Burnbank Brae Woods as they are locally known, covers a sizable area on the outskirts of Galston.  You will be looking for a standard plastic tupperware box.  Hand on heart, it shouldn't pose too many issues. At the time of setting this cache my GPS was accurate to within 17 feet. Please replace the natural camouflage, and happy hunting!
