This station opened on April 5, 1905 when the railway was extended from former Nagasaki Station to the present station. The former station opened in 1897 was renamed Urakami Station.
In front of the station is a tram stop of Nagasaki Electric Tramway, and more many lines bus stop.

長崎駅は県庁所在地にある中心の駅で、産業・観光の拠点です。
駅前にはＪＲの他に、路面電車（長崎電気軌道）の停留所『長崎駅前電停』や、多くのバス路線が集まるバス停があります。
キャッシュは駅前が工事中のために、暫定で駅前高架歩道橋下の歩道上に移動しました。書くものを持ってきて下さい。
