Geocache Description:

This cache was placed for Cachepalooza 7. Cache placement has been approved by Martin Morse, park service specialist.

Obey all speed limits. Do not block gates. All wheels off the pavement. Do not cross the railroad tracks except at the main park road or the US 1 bridge.

The American Civil War was the first time the US Army was large enough to be organized into Corps. The Union VII Corps was originally formed in the Department of Virginia in July 1862. It included various divisions stationed in southeastern Virginia at places like Yorktown, Norfolk, and Suffolk. Part of the Corps successfully withstood the Siege of Suffolk against Confederates under James Longstreet. The Corps was broken up on August 1, 1863.

A new VII Corps was formed in the Department of Arkansas in January 1864 and remained until the end of the war. Frederick Steele led the Corps on a campaign know as Steele's Expedition where they fought battles at Camden, Poison Springs, and Jenkins' Ferry.

The VII Corps would be reformed again near the end of World War I (1918-1919) and for World War II (1940-1946) where it participated in D-Day and Operation Cobra (the Normandy breakout offensive).

Organized again in 1950 because of the Cold War, the VII Corps was one of the two main US combat formations stationed in West Germany (along with the V Corps). It was redeployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield and played a major role in Desert Storm (the 1991 Gulf War). Part of the VII Corps won a major battle over the Iraqi Republican Guard at 73 Easting, "the last great tank battle of the 20th century". VII Corps was disbanded yet again after the war.
