Dehra Doon Road is both historic in itself and in SoBad’s family history.
His maternal family lived in this road for many years and it was the place for many summer family holidays. His mother picked both hops and tobacco in the area when both were thriving industries.
Today Mrs SoBad noticed a memorial to the history of the area that she had never noticed before. The coordinates take you to both the noticeboard and the cache which is hidden below.
The notice board explains that Colonel Charles Thomas, born in Bath, England, came here after service in India with his wife, Anne. He named the area Dehra Doon for 2 reasons. One was that a large number of the troops in the forces he served with in India had come from the area around Dehra Doon in Ireland. If you want to know the other reason, read the notice board.
Colonel Thomas died at 76 when he fell from the rear of his gig and is buried in the Riwaka Cemetery, where there is also a cache.
On the day this was placed, the trees at the side of the road past the cache were beautiful so we recommend carrying on further.
