The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the Wonders of the Modern World. It opened on May 27 1937. The celebration attracted close to 1,000,000 visitors.
At the time it was the longest Suspension bridge in the world with a span of 4,200 ft. And a total length of 8,981 ft. However, since 1964 it has been surpassed by 9 other bridges.
Each cable is made of 27,572 individual strands of wire, with a total length of 80,000 miles of wire. The bridge has approximately 1,200,000 rivets.
The Current speed limit on the bridge is 55MPH
The color of the bridge is International Orange. It was chosen because it compliments the natural surroundings and is more visible in fog.
As of 2006 only 28 people have been known to survive a jump from the bridge.
