Geocache Description:

Congrats to Rooster6 on the FTF!! You are looking for a cammoed 35mm canister near the site of a once busy train station.

You can find a lot to park in on Rt. 65, walk and take the steps down or you can drive down and park right in front of GZ (Please note they are just finishing work on this bridge and South Birmingham may be closed at times - taking the steps from Rt 65 may be your best bet) allthough this may take more time than a park and grab. Happy hunting!

AVALON STATION

I could not place the cache any closer to the actual station site because that property is posted no trespassing. The county real estate maps, however show the road as public almost all the way down to the tracks so you could take a closer look at the site and also where the footbridge might have been that took commuters to the platform across the tracks. Some of the guards are missing so if you do venture down don't take small kids and be careful near the edge.

Interestingly the current  tax records for the property still shows the owner as the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railtraod (Long, Long gone)

This was one of a number of stations along the Ohio in Allegheny County. I don't know when it may have been built, but it does appear on an 1897 map as part of the PFW&C RR and it was in use into the 1960's as a Pennsylvania RR commuter station. When the station was in use, you could take the road down to the station, or via several sets of steps or across the tracks via a footbridge to a platform on the other side of the tracks.
