US Highway 169 travels thru Minnesota from Elmore in the South to Virginia in the north. It was completely paved by the 40's, and much of it was cement, had 8 foot wide lanes, and small angled shoulder sections that were called "suicide shoulders". In the early 60's much of it was made into a 4 lane expressway, and bypassed most of the towns in it's path. In this area, Le Sueur, Belle Plaine, and Jordan were all bypassed. The road was also straightened at the same time. Some of the abandoned parts were given state, county or township numbers. This is the only stretch I know of with remains of the suicide shoulders and original cement, and can be seen just a little ways to the SW. This should be an easy park and grab, but while here take a look at how narrow these lanes are, and try to imaging meeting a car at 60 MPH. especially the big cars of the 50's and 60's
