Geocache Description:

A micro cache in the beautiful grounds of Cornhill.

Royal Cornhill Hospital and surrounds has some beautiful buildings and gardens belonging to Aberdeen University, and to the people of Aberdeen.  Just off the public footpath, there is a pink granite obelisk commemorating John Forbes of Newe and Sir Charles Forbes, Baronet of Newe and Edinglassie - the very gentlemen who initially funded the building of the Royal Cornhill Lunatic Asylum back in 1800.

The obelisk's plaques are not in good condition and barely legible, but the obelisk itself is a Category C Listed Building, designed in 1830 by architect John Smith.  Apparently the obelisk was initially erected in St Nicholas churchyard but was moved in 1838 by Archibald Simpson (yes, the one who has the pub in Union Street named after him!).

Fortunately with developments not only in psychology and therapy but also in the public perception of mental illness, treatment both within hospitals and within the community have become far more acceptable than pre-Victorian times.  It's important to remember that according to the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) one in four Scots will have mental health problems sometime during their lives.

Parts of Cornhill have become ruined over time and are due to be demolished.  Anybody interested in urban decay can check out some photographs of the old asylum here: http://www.urbexforums.com/showthread.php/16475-Royal-Cornhill-Hospital-Aberdeen-March-2012
No, not mine.  I just found them interesting.

Onto the cache!!

Cache is very close to the obelisk, with parking nearby.  Stealth required!!
