Where In The Hal-patiokee Am I??? Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

JL_HSTRE: I brought a replacement can, but after surveying the situation I decided to archive it instead. The trail has changed for the worse since I placed the cache, with the part closest to the cache not even being recognizable as a trail anymore.

Cache container is in bad shape, with holes rusted in the bottom. I'm not sure if it's salvageable.

Geocache Description:

You are looking for an ammo can in Halpatiokee Park near the end of an unmarked trail. Please be sure to replace it behind the tree out of sight of the trail and do not lay it on its side.

The area could be muddy/wet after rainfall or if the river is up, but it was dry when I placed the cache. Only about 20 ft of light bushwhacking east from the trail to the cache. Watch for an old barbedwire fence along part of the trail.

Leashed dogs are okay in this park. You might be able to ride a bike on this trail depending how badly the hogs have torn it up and if you don't mind riding close to the aforementioned fence. Expect lots of mosquitoes here and watch for snakes and other jungle critters.

Halpatiokee Regional Park is managed by Martin County Parks & Recreation. The park includes 5 baseball fields, 5 tennis courts, 5 soccer/football fields, 11 pavillions, an outdoor roller hockey rink, a small playground, a mountain bike trail, numerous hiking trails, and canoe/kayak landing with a small primitive campground.

I've been visiting and exploring this park for most of a decade. I kayaked the river, helped cut and maintain the bike trail, and walked the trails out of curiosity (or ran them for exercise) many times before I started geocaching. My time spent here surely helped lay the foundation that my love of geocaching would build on. Thus it was appropriate the first time I ever went geocaching it was in this park (Jan 2, 2010 with InitialJoe).

When I decieded to place my first geocache, I looked at 4 locations in the park, but all of them had proximity issues with existing geocaches. A recent visit to the park reminded me of some of those locations and a check of active caches revealed this spot had opened up.

As long as I have been wandering Halpatiokee I have wondered why this trail is here. It has remained about the same as long as I have visited the park. Is it some never finished loop? Will that fence (a relic of the area's pre-park days) ever be taken down for safety's sake?

Congrats to Julier772/ljjaw~team for the FTF - their first ever! And thanks to everyone who came out here on the first day the cache was published; most finds in the first 24 hours on any of my non-JDSP caches!
