Geocache Description:

A series of caches on a circular walk from Braco, numbered clockwise (dexter) but you can do them anyway you like, so this is either the last or first cache.
The series cache titles (titulus) and description (genus) reflect the historical Roman importance of this area.
We had to have a wee dig at the Romans, though....after all what did they do for us???

The Braco Ley Tunnel
Mysterious tunnels or "secret passages" are a common element of local folklore tradition.
Legends about the existence of secret tunnels usually involve improbably long subterranean passages, sometimes running under major obstacles such as rivers (such as here) to reach their destinations.
According to the legend, backed up by 1726 records, show a subterranean passage was said to run from the Ardoch Roman fort, under the River Knaik to the fort (Keir) on Grinnin Hill. This tunnel is said to contain a great deal of treasure as recorded in these lines;

"From the Camp of Ardoch,
To the Grinnin Hill of Keir,
Are nine Kings rents,
For seven hundred year."

This apparently was in the 17th century and the legend states that a criminal was offered his life by the Regality Court if he would agree to be lowered into the abyss and have a look. When he was drawn up he brought some Roman armour with him but in his second descent was suffocated. In 1720 the entrance to the passage was covered with a large stone. The armour was preserved in Ardoch House but in 1751 “ was carried off by the Highlanders and its whereabouts is now unknown ”

Should the tunnel and its treasure exist, it could be right under you at GZ.

From the parking, cross the bridge (careful of traffic) and go through the gap in the wall along the path. No need to cross the Pack Horse Bridge
