The Mangahao Makahika Track was opened by the Right Hon. Helen Clark on 23 February 2008. A plaque commemorating the opening can be seen near the cache. This is a 15 km track and can be walked either way in about 7 hrs, or a section can be done as a day trip from the Poulton Drive parking area. At the site of the cache is a camping area with toilet, and water nearby from the stream.
The Makahika tramline formation passed through the valley in the early part of the 20th century, when considerable logging took place in this area of the Tararuas. The trail follows the former tramline route with benched track and cuttings clearly visible in places.
Plenty of regenerating native bush can be found just along the track from the cache site, and if you have time, a trip up to the Horowhenua lookout will reward you with good vistas of Shannon, Horowhenua and Manawatu.
Good tramping footwear is essential, warm clothing, waterproof rainwear, food and drink is advised. Dogs are allowed on leash. The track is marked across the farmland from Poads Road, then by orange triangles once the bush is reached. Use caution crossing streams, especially after rain.
The cache is a small tube, with no room for swaps. Please bring your own pen.
Enjoy this lovely area!
