Fu realizzata nel 1807 interrando il canale preesistente e unendo le due fondamente che lo affiancavano nel 1866, con l'ingresso delle truppe italiane, la via venne dedicata a Giuseppe Garibaldi, al quale fu poi innalzato il monumento all'ingresso dei Giardini.
Posta nel popoloso sestiere di Castello, la via Garibaldi è sempre piena di vita; ricca di negozi di ogni tipo, bar, ristoranti
Alla mattina vi si trova un mercato di frutta, verdura e pesce.
