Geocache Description:

Welcome to McLaughlin Cemetary

This cache is located at the southern outskirts of Vankleek Hill, Ontario. This "Restin'" cache is part of a series that will take you to local cemeteries - places of historic importance and interest. We introduce you to these cemeteries as a way of exploring our local history, and the people who were early settlers here. The first Prebyterian Church was built at the beginning of the XIX century. By the end of the XIX century, it was becoming obvious that the old Brick Church (Presbyterian) in Vankleek Hill was too small to hold the congregation comfortably and a decision was taken to build a new church. The site chosen for the new church was close to the site of the original stone church and burial ground. It took an act of Provincial Parliament (a Private Members Bill) to allow the cemetery to be moved (to what is now McLaughlin Cemetery) and the church built. That church is now the Knox Church. It seems that this is the official resting place for the area's Barton ancestry. While visiting this beautiful and peaceful location please be respectful of your surroundings and try to leave the cache exactly as you found it.
