North Van’s quiet community of Norgate is unique in that it is the only sea level subdivision on the North Shore! While the main access streets in Norgate bear the names Tatlow, McBride and Sowden, the remaining roadways share a common theme – wood. In no particular order, you have Alderwood, Beechwood, Elmwood, Rosewood, Maplewood, Silverwood, Whitwood, Greenwood, Fernwood, Cottonwood, Pinewood, and Redwood.
Beside the tennis courts at the south foot of Redwood Street you will find an interesting grove of trees. It is not clear whether Redwood Street was named for these trees, or if the eight Sequoiadendron giganteum were planted after the street was already named. Whatever the reason, I’m sure tennis players appreciate the ample shade provide by these magnificent youngsters (Giant Redwoods can live up to 3,000 years and these ones are barely into their sixties!).
While you are here, keep a sharp eye out for muggles of all kinds. This part of the Spirit Trail is very popular with cyclists who use it to commute across North Van away from traffic. There's a doggy day-care facility down the road and the staff often bring the dogs for a walk in the park. In good weather you might have to wait for tennis players to finish a set. There's a nice new playground nearby to entertain the little ones.
Please keep in mind there is no need to harm these trees in any way. You do not need to pick at or peel off any bark. The cache is not on the ground. If you are the least bit tempted to fondle the redwoods, try reading the hint first!
