Geocache Description:

You are seeking a short multi cache which begins at the oblisk grave marker for John W. Stanley.

John Wheeler Stanley, born in Tuscaloosa County in 1827, was the seventh of the twelve children of War of 1812 veteran, Benjamin Franklin Stanley. John Stanley married Eliza Hester Johns in 1846.
The 1850 and 1860 censuses list them as farmers with a modest estate and growing family. The children were Benjamin Edward, Missouri McKinney, Thomas Jefferson, Cornelia Josephine, Rufus Daniel, Sara Catherine, and Jesse Mercer Stanley.

The cause of John W. Stanley's death in his 35th is not known. In 1883 John’s widow Eliza moved to Texas to join her children and sister. For the remainder of her life, Eliza made her home with her son Rufus in his home near Itasca, Hill Co, Texas. When Eliza died in 1886, she was buried in Texas. Rufus placed an obelisk at her grave inscribed on the back, "Our father Buryed in Tuskaloosa Co., Ala."

Later Rufus returned to Tuscaloosa to have a larger obelisk placed at his father's grave. It included Eliza's, Jesse's, and Thomas Jefferson's statistics and location of their interments. He had a cement and rock wall built around the entire cemetery. Then he had a picture taken of the new wall, the damp mortar still glistening and the tall monument towering above one corner gleaming in the sunlight; at that time the cemetery was surrounded by a cornfield.

There are seven people interred in this small cemetery. The scratched markings on the natural stone grave markers have faded through time. The graves here are for Edward Johns and Elizabeth McKinney Boone, Alfred Jefferson, Sarah, Frances, and Susan Jane, and John Wheeler Stanley.

To locate the final, gather information from the grave marker for John W. Stanley.
