Bournemouth's Past: Flora Thompson Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Lost2011: Upon collecting this cache I managed to drop it behind the green box! Found again luckily. Although I didn't like the location, this cache gave me some great memories, as referred to in the description. Since the cache went live, I also got warned by the police for my speed as I was getting out of my car to replace this cache in the Spring.

This series has had a great 18 months but now it is time to archive. Thanks for all the finds. If you haven't already, enjoy the Bournemouth History series, which will also be archived in 2015.

Geocache Description:

This is my town. I live here. I love it.

This series of 10 stand alone caches, with a bonus at the end, will take you on a journey through Bournemouth, visiting a mix of urban and residential areas, and hopefully learning a little bit of history along the way. For the most part I have tried to make the caches accessible to all.

I have been inspired to set these caches around Bournemouth for some caching friends who are in need of filling their calendar, whilst also finding areas that are sparse of caches. Although the idea of stand alone caches with a bonus is not original, for this area it is very uncommon spread across large distances of the town, and therefore I would like to think this is a little bit different, which is what I'm all about.

Each cache has a number needed to locate the bonus, so you may wish to make notes as you go along.

Due to the urban nature of this series and the high probability of muggles, I have tried to make all the caches easy to find by providing detail in the hints, so please use the spoiler.

Flora Thompson lived at 2 Edgehill Road for part of her life, and it was here that she benefited from good access to books when the public library opened in Winton, in 1907.

Not long after, in 1911, she won an essay competition in The Ladies Companion for a 300-word essay about Jane Austen.

Flora Thompson's most famous works are the Lark Rise to Candleford trilogy, which she sent as essays to Oxford University Press in 1938 and which were published soon after.

Plaque on 2 Edgehill Road, unveiled on 9th April 2008 by Olivia Hallinan ('Laura' in the BBC production of Lark Rise to Candleford).

The cache is placed in view of the blue commemorative plaque.

A little bit of Bournemouth history lives in me. I spent my last night of single life at this very house in 2004, completely unaware of the history involved.

Congratulations Panda&Pickles for FTF.
