Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the James S. McDonnell Planetarium in 2013.

Opening day of the planetarium was April 16, 1963.  It was funded in part by a $1 million city bond issue and $200,000 for equipment from James S. McDonnell, co-founder of McDonnell Douglas, (now a part of Boeing).

With public interest in the space race being quite high at that time, 3,000 visitors came through the door the day a full-scale model of the Apollo space capsule was put on display.  More than 18.5 million visitors have visited the Planetarium since it opened.  Over 30 astronauts have visited including Alan Shepard and Buzz Aldrin.  Actor William Shatner also visited – he read poetry and sang during a 1979 appearance.

The planetarium was designed by St. Louis- based architect Gyo Obata.  Its distinctive shape is a hyperboloid of revolution, meaning that it uses straight lines to create a curved shape.

The dome measures 80 feet in diameter and is the largest Planetarium dome in North America.  The projector is a Zeiss Universarium – the best optical star projector in the world.  It displays a field of 9,100 stars, the most the human eye can observe from the Earth under optimal conditions.

The Planetarium also contains other related exhibits on astronomy, aviation and space travel. Additional information can be found at http://www.slsc.org/planetarium
