Geocache Description:

A geoláda a geocaching.hu oldalon GCFKD név alatt található.

Visit Feked, a traditionally German, charming little village with unique architectural details and homogeneous street fronts that cannot be seen anywhere else in Hungary.

Where is it and how to get there?
Feked lies in a valley surrounded by gentle slopes of the Kelet-Mecsek (East Mecsek) and the Geresd hills.
It is a 13 km drive from route 6, turning off at Pécsvárad, or you can also reach it from M6, using the Somberek exit.
Park near the church in order to enjoy a short walk on the main street on your way to the cache.

What to see?
Instead of the usual things to see in a village (church, old wayside crosses, calvary), nearly the whole settlement is worth your attention. As you arrive on the road, initially you see the common sight of a village, but as you are approaching the center more and more beauty will catch your eyes. By the time you get to the church you will notice the tradition old German houses lining the Main Street that gives the character of the village.
The row of peasants' houses were built in the first third of the 20th century. The special design of the facades with their painted and plaster ornaments make the houses look like a fairy-tale set. The painted, narrow, tall, richly carved wooden doors with the colored glass decoration above them are unique. The porches with the turned wooden columns and the original, wrought iron gates enhance the harmony.
The church was built in 1765, renovated in 1992. Its specialty is the richly decorated, copper tower rooftop. The Louis XVI style pulpit made by a local craftsman is also noteworthy.

Past and present of Feked
Its name appears as Feketh in an Árpád Age document. Later, in 1372 it is mentioned as the property of the Cikádor (now Bátaszék) Cistercian Abbey. It was probably continuously inhabited until the Turkish times when it was devasteted. Its resettlement started in 1702 when Catholic Germans from the Fulda area moved here, bringing their customs, culture and not last, their gastronomy. This is where the name of the South-Transdanubian thick and delicious sausage, Stifolder, originates from: Stift Fuldaer meaning "from the Abby of Fulda"). In 200 years they revived the village. By the turn of the 20th century Feked had nearly 900 inhabitants.
A sad period started after 1945: resettlement, deportation, new inhabitants arriving from the Felvidék. By now the the number of inhabitants decreased to 180, school, kindergarden, and other institutions had to be closed. But thanks to the cooperation of the self-government, the cizitens, and people originating from Feked, the village started to develop again.
You can observe the mentality, diligence and high standards of people living here by looking at the well-maintened houses or the example of the old and neglected rectory turned into a modern tourist hostel. Recently new settlers have arrived from other parts of Hungary and Europe, seeking the peace that Feked can offer.
